Both the Sharks and Bulldogs have been hit hard by State of Origin this week as they prepare for a big battle in the Shire.
Cronulla are missing four of their superstars, namely James Maloney, Wade Graham, Jack Bird and Andrew Fifita, while Canterbury will be without Blues trio Josh Jackson, David Klemmer and Brett Morris.
Considering only two points have separated these sides in their last two meetings – and with the amount of star players on the sidelines – this promises to be another close contest.
After a stellar fortnight which saw them conceded no tries in wins over Melbourne and Penrith, the Sharks have done just enough to get by in recent weeks, however they are still sitting pretty in the top four.
One area Cronulla need to improve is their discipline – they are top two for errors, missed tackles and penalties conceded in the competition, and it’s only been their defence and competitiveness that has seen them win games over the last couple of weeks.
Canterbury’s up-and-down season continues to trundle along, but they are in big need of a win after consecutive losses against the Cowboys and Roosters over the last fortnight.
Those defeats have seen the Bulldogs slip outside of the top eight, while the loss of Josh Reynolds is proving tough to overcome, with the Dogs lacking even more spark than usual in the attacking third.
But running into a Cronulla side missing their chief playmaker and three other stars could be what the Bulldogs need in order to kick-start their season again.
Although they’ve lost their last two against the Sharks, Canterbury have more often than not got the better of them in recent games. If Cronulla continue to give up cheap ball, the Bulldogs are more than capable of engaging in the arm wrestle. This will be close either way, but I think the Dogs can grind out victory here.
