Six points adrift of the top eight with less than two months of the regular season remaining, nearly every game for the foreseeable future is a must-win clash for the Bulldogs, including Sunday’s showdown with the Knights at Belmore.
While a return to their spiritual home may be viewed as an advantage, the Bulldogs actually have a terrible record since returning to Belmore, winning just one of five matches.
When you factor in their non-existent attack, losing three players to Origin and the angst from fans over Des Hasler’s continued reign at the club, and this is looking like another disappointing afternoon at Belmore for the once-proud Canterbury club.
Only taking on the Knights, who have ‘won’ the wooden spoon the last two seasons and are on track to complete an unwanted hat-trick in 2017, sees the Bulldogs in with a slightly better-than-even chance of prevailing.
Newcastle have actually been a much-improved team for the majority of the season, but they chose a bad time to deliver their worst performance of the season last week, falling 33-12 to the Tigers, a result which saw the joint-venture club leapfrog them off the bottom of the ladder.
But while it’s tough to find positives in the Canterbury camp, there are some shining lights at the Knights. For one their attack can fire when on song, with Newcastle averaging 16.6 points per game – more than the Bulldogs dismal 13.9.
Nathan Ross is also a genuine game-breaker and in fantastic form – and the NRL’s newest cult hero will certainly fancy his chances of unlocking the Bulldogs’ defence on Sunday.
Canterbury are on a four-match winning streak over Newcastle, but they are not worth backing as heavy favourites for this clash. The Knights have been showing upside this season, and they are certainly a better chance than $3.05 to prevail at Belmore on Sunday.
