Down on troops and yet to really discover their best football this season, the Titans and Cowboys will be desperate for a valuable two competition points as they continue to work their way into 2017.
Johanthan Thurston rightly receives most of the praise when the Cowboys are firing and when they won the premiership in 2015, but last week we saw just how vulnerable North Queensland can be without their two biggest weapons going forward.
Matt Scott is gone for the season with a knee injury, while Jason Taumalolo will also miss this encounter with the Titans due to suspension.
North Queensland lacked go-forward and couldn’t penetrate Manly’s line last week, and a timid 30-8 loss was one of their most disappointing performances in years – at least when Thurston is present.
It just goes to show how much influence Scott and Taumalolo have on the Cowboys’ performances, and Paul Green will have to figure out how to win without them this week.
On the other hand, Gold Coast come into this clash full of momentum and confidence having registered their first win of the season last week – an impressive 26-14 triumph over the previously unbeaten Eels.
While they lost their opening two games, the Titans still demonstrated an ability to score points, and they are currently averaging four tries a game and 23 points a game.
Jarryd Hayne’s injury – as bad as it sounds – could actually be a blessing in disguise for the Titans, who played their best football before the arrival of Hayne last season.
With Scott and Taumalolo missing, this all of a sudden becomes a tough game to call. But it’s unlikely Thurston will have two poor games in a row, and being the competitor he is, he will be determined to put on a masterclass on Saturday night. I’m still not convinced the Titans are where they were last season, so I’ll side with the tried and trusted – albeit tentative at present – Cowboys.
