Both the Knights and Bulldogs have been in terrible form over the last two months or so – who prevails on Saturday night and takes home the two points in the Hunter?
I’ve got to lean with the home side in this one.
Canterbury are an absolute basket case of a club at the moment. Inheriting a huge mess created by the former board and coach, Dean Pay has endured a nightmare campaign – and it’s recently gotten a whole lot worse, with Moses Mbye and Aaron Woods leaving mid-season due to salary cap constraints, while Kieran Foran is out for the season with a foot injury.
Furthermore, their best player this season – Raymond Faitala-Mariner – suffered a broken hand while playing for New Zealand in the Denver Test last week.
The Bulldogs can’t score points and their defence is getting worse every week. A heavy loss at Belmore to the Titans in their last fixture was arguably their worst performance for the season. But, unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the worst could still be yet to come…
Newcastle are also struggling, but not to the same extent. The Knights have already gone through what the Bulldogs have after Wayne Bennett departed the club in similar circumstances, with the club picking up three wooden spoons.
The loss of Mitchell Pearce for the season was a cruel blow just as the Knights appeared ready to challenge for the top eight, but they’ve lost six of their last seven and are heading in the wrong direction down the ladder.
Nevertheless, the Knights should be too strong for a hapless Bulldogs side at home. Canterbury won’t be able to score enough points, and although it’s tough to have faith in the Knights, they should be far too good on Saturday.
