With games against competition heavyweights the Dragons, Roosters and Storm still to come this season, it’s basically essential that the Eels beat the Titans on Saturday if they want to have any chance of missing out on the wooden spoon.
Anchored alone at the bottom of the ladder with 10 competition points after just four wins from 19 games all season, the Eels are firm favourites to pick up the spoon this season – despite beating rivals Canterbury a couple of weeks ago.
With the Bulldogs and Cowboys each winning games in recent weeks, the Eels are once again playing catch-up, and with a tough run home, it’s hard to see them finishing anywhere but bottom.
Parramatta have the worst defence in the competition, but they haven’t been that bad over the last month – and they were close to taking out the Rabbitohs last week, with the top four side just edging them in the final 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Titans come into this encounter on the back of their most impressive performance of the season to date – a 36-12 triumph over the eighth-placed Warriors.
Always an unpredictable outfit, the Titans showcased just how dangerous they can be when everything clicks, but the problem for them is that only happens a few times a season.
The Titans have done a solid job of beating those teams below or around them on the ladder this season – they are 5-2 against teams outside the top eight, which is a good sign for the Gold Coast ahead of this showdown.
However, they have a poor record against the Eels in Sydney and Parramatta have been operating at a decent level over the last month. I can see a low-scoring affair playing out here and I’m leaning with the Eels to dig out the win and heat up the race for the spoon!
George Jennings (groin strain) returns on the wing for Parramatta, with Jarryd Hayne moving back to centre and Brad Takairangi to the bench. Reed Mahoney starts at hooker for Kaysa Pritchard (shoulder) as Jaemon Salmon debuts as the bench utility. Tim Mannah starts at prop with Daniel Alvaro (knee/concussion) out. Kane Evans has been recalled on the bench with David Gower dropping to the reserves.
The Titans are unchanged from last week’s win over the Warriors.
