Sydney Roosters play host to Brisbane Broncos in a blockbuster showdown to launch the 2017 NRL Finals Series on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.
After 26 gruelling and energy-sapping rounds of intense football, it all comes down to the next four weeks, with the Roosters and Broncos kicking off all the action on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.
The winner will earn a valuable week off and advance to the preliminary finals, while the loser will have to do it the hard way and play three straight matches in order capture the premiership.
Both sides head into this encounter in winning form, although neither side were overly impressive, with the Roosters edging the Titans by four points last week and the Broncos holding off bitter rivals the Cowboys.
It’s been a tremendous bounce back season for the Roosters, but they will want to lift their level considerably from their poor showing against the Titans, and although they finished in second spot, they were only ranked seventh in attack for 2017, meaning Trent Robinson will want a big defensive effort from his troops on Friday.
Brisbane meanwhile – apart from a nightmare showing against the Eels in which they leaked 50 points – have eight of their last 11 games to finish the regular season strongly.
However they have suffered a big blow for this clash, with skipper Darius Boyd ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Roosters should be at full strength with Dylan Napa and Aidan Guerra both expected to return after missing the Titans game.
These two sides have split their last 10 meetings at five wins apiece, but it’s been the Roosters who have dominated the Broncos at Allianz, winning their last four encounters at the venue, including a 18-16 victory in Round 13. Not much separates these sides, but home ground advantage has proven crucial in the past, and it easily could be the difference again. Roosters to win 1-12.
Dylan Napa and Aidan Guerra return to the starting side for the Rooster as Zane Tetevano and Victor Radley drop out, while Darius Boyd and Tevita Pangai Junior are out for Brisbane due to hamstring injuries, with Kodi Nikorima moving to fullback and Benji Marshall to halfback, while David Mead and Jai Arrow join the bench.
