Sydney Roosters look to keep pace with competition leaders Melbourne Storm when they play host to resident battlers the Newcastle Knights in the first NRL Round 20 game on Friday night at Allianz Stadium.
With the State of Origin period done and dusted, the Roosters target a big end to the regular season, beginning with what should be a comfortable victory against bottom-placed Newcastle on Friday.
Currently flying high in second spot after 18 rounds, the Roosters are well-positioned to take advantage of a potential dip of form from Melbourne and leapfrog them to the top of the ladder, while a top four finish is well within their own destiny.
On the other hand, the Roosters are only two points ahead of sixth-placed North Queensland, so it’s imperative that they keep winning in order to build a further gap.
The Roosters should be refreshed after enjoying a bye after their two-point win over Souths a fortnight ago. Mitchell Pearce, Dylan Napa and Blake Ferguson are all back from representative duty, but the Tricolours are missing some key players, with Jake Friend and Michael Gordon both out with long-term injuries, while Boyd Cordner is still recovering from a gruelling Origin period and won’t play on Friday.
Meanwhile, it was unfortunately a familiar story for the Knights last weekend, with the Hunter club playing superbly in the opening half only to undo all their great work and deliver a disastrous second half performance and fall to the fourth-placed Broncos.
Newcastle’s effort is admirable, but their lack of experience and overall class across the paddock means they just can’t put in 80-minute performances or really aim up when the games heads into the crunch period.
Former Rooster Shaun Kenny-Dowall will make his debut for the Knights, striking up a potentially lethal combination with Origin hero Dane Gagai on the right edge.
However this is a genuine David vs Goliath clash and it will take a monumental effort from the Knights to keep this scoreline close, let alone win. The Roosters have been dominant over Newcastle in recent meetings, and after a nice break following Origin, they should be at the peak of their powers. Roosters to emerge comfortable winners.
