After a bright start to the season where they surged to the top of the competition ladder, the Dragons of old have turned up over the last two months – and they’ve slipped from second to sixth as a result.
It hasn’t been a pretty period for the Dragons recently, with just two wins over the last-placed Tigers and erratic Warriors (plus the bye) the only points the Red V have to show for their efforts in the last eight rounds.
Problems in attack have once again begun to surface, with the Dragons failing to score a try in a 16-2 loss to the Bulldogs, while they only managed 10 points in a 24-10 defeat to the Eels last week.
You get the feeling the Dragons are the kind of side that need to operate at their absolute peak to win games – and that’s simply impossible to maintain throughout 26 rounds. They are starting to slip, and this presents Newcastle with a great opportunity.
The Knights are confident after finally hauling themselves off the bottom of the ladder, with a combination of their bye last week and the Tigers’ loss to Cronulla lifting them to 15th.
Despite their lowly position on the ladder, the Knights have been a very much improved outfit this season, and they come into this encounter in solid form.
They’ve conquered the Raiders and led in-form top eight sides Manly and Penrith at half-time, so there’s no reason why they can’t put themselves in a winning position against a struggling Dragons side.
Newcastle don’t have a good record against the Dragons recently – but the same can be said about them against any side in the competition over the last few years. There’s solid value in the Knights for this one, and I think they are a more than even chance of claiming the two points.
