After taking the scalp of the reigning premiers in their own backyard last week, can the Sharks back it up and claim victory against the last-placed Cowboys at home on Saturday night?
It’s been an up-and-down season for the Sharks, but they’ve done enough to currently sit in sixth spot on the ladder, just two points from the top four. It hasn’t been pretty, but the Sharks have locked in finals football and now they can focus their attention to peaking at the right time and landing a home final in week one.
Cronulla once again proved there’s no better team when it comes to the grind than the 2016 premiers – they beat Melbourne at their own game at AAMI Park for the third season on the trot and that will give Shane Flanagan’s team immense confidence going forward.
But they can’t afford slip-ups such as their last home outing against the Sea Eagles, which they lost by one point. Coming up against another side at the bottom of the ladder, can the Sharks get the job done?
North Queensland find themselves on the bottom of the ladder coming into Round 23 despite their brilliant 34-30 triumph over bitter rivals Brisbane last week.
The Cowboys always peak for that match-up and they delivered in front of their home fans. But there’s a lot of work left to do if they want to avoid the wooden spoon and send out superstar captain Johnathan Thurston on a positive note.
With the Eels and Bulldogs also playing some of their best football towards the end of the season, the Cowboys need to keep winning in order to miss the spoon – but with games against the Eels and Titans to come after Cronulla, they somewhat have their destiny in their own hands.
The Cowboys traditionally make the Sharks work for their wins at Southern Cross Group Stadium, and I think it will be another tough game for the home side. But Cronulla are the better team this season, and on the back of their Melbourne triumph, they should have enough firepower to edge this one out.
Wade Graham (knee) is replaced by Scott Sorensen in the second row with Kurt Capewell added to the bench for Cronulla, while John Asiata replaces the suspended Jason Taumalolo at lock for the Cowboys, with Francis Molo joining the interchange.
