After losing their last two matches against the Rabbitohs and Sharks, reigning premiers Melbourne returned to the winners circle last week with a 20-4 victory over the Eels.
It wasn’t the most clinical of performances – and they lost a number of key players to injury – but the Storm got the job done and locked in top spot on the ladder with two games remaining.
However, they are equal on points with the Roosters and Rabbitohs and can’t afford to slip up in their final two games – because if they do, Melbourne could miss out on a home final and find themselves in Sydney for an elimination final in week 2 of the finals.
Craig Bellamy is a master of timing his runs, so he won’t be too worried about his side losing two of his last three matches and their relatively patchy win over the Eels – but he will demand a more polished performance against the Titans, who have troubled them over the years.
Gold Coast have continued to be one of the most unpredictable teams in the competition this season – none more so than the last fortnight, when they were edged out in golden point by the Panthers before staging a magnificent comeback to put 42 points on the Sea Eagles last week.
The Titans moved four points clear of the wooden spoon as a result and it would take some phenomenal escapes from the lies of Canterbury, Manly, Parramatta and North Queensland below them for Gold Coast to finish 2018 with the spoon.
As a result, the Titans have nothing to lose, can throw the ball around and try and disrupt Melbourne’s structure.
Gold Coast have beaten Melbourne six times previously, but they’ve also lost 12 times. With the finals approaching, I can’t see the Storm slipping up here, but I do think this could go right down to the wire.
Will Matthews replaces Bryce Cartwright on the bench in the only change for Gold Coast, while Justin Olam replaces centre Will Chambers (suspension) for Melbourne. Cheyse Blair is in for winger Suliasi Vunivalu (hamstring) and ui Kamikamica and Ryley Jacks replace Nelson Asofa-Solomona (ankle) and Brandon Smith (knee) on the bench.
