That will be easier said than done as Italy will also be determined to make a positive start to the competition. But, if truth be told, the home side should prove too strong for the Azzurri, who last won at Murrayfield in 2015.

That was also the last time Italy beat Scotland in all Tests between these countries. The Scots have won 21 of their 29 previous international meetings, with the Azzurri winning the other eight matches.

The Scots have been in superb form at Murrayfield in the Six Nations in recent years as they have won their last six matches at the venue – their last loss there was on February 6, 2016 when they suffered a 15-9 defeat to England.

Meanwhile, Italy are yearning for Six Nations success as they are currently on a 17-match losing streak in the competition which stretches back to 2015.

Head coach Conor O’Shea will be desperate for victory as he was involved in 10 of those matches since being in charge of the team for his first Six Nations game in 2017.

O’Shea will be feeling the heat as he prepares for this match as his overall record as Azzurri boss is little better than his Six Nations one. Italy have only won two of their last 13 games and just six of the 28 matches since O’Shea replaced Jacques Brunel as Italy coach during the 2016 June Tests.

However, they came agonisingly close to ending their winless Six Nations run when they faced Scotland in the corresponding fixture in Rome last year. The Azzurri were on course for a memorable triumph until a 79th minute penalty from Greig Laidlaw secured the Scots a narrow 29-27 victory.

That result and the impressive performances from Italian outfit Benetton in the PRO14 gives Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend cause for concern ahead of this weekend’s clash.

“Italy have made life tough for Scotland in every Test match we’ve played,” he said.

“I remember that as a player, as a supporter and as a coach – and they were better than us in most of last season’s contest in Rome. They played with pace, were physical and we had to play really, really well in the final quarter to win.

“That performance and also the recent displays of Benetton Treviso are sharp reminders for our players that this will be a difficult fixture.

“Our challenge is to win the physical battle, which is a strength of Italian rugby. We will also have to bring energy and accuracy in order to get our campaign off to a winning start.”

Although they possess plenty of attacking threats – especially in their back-line – keep an eye on inside centre Sam Johnson, who is making his Test bow. Australian-born, Johnson was named in Scotland’s squad for the 2018 November internationals but a knee injury put his debut in the Test arena on hold. The Glasgow Warriors man is a good distributor, who is solid in defence and also dangerous on attack. If he manages to get over the inevitable nerves, he is sure to make up for lost time by making a big impact in this match.

He’s 35 years old now but Sergio Parisse is still one of the first names on the Azzurri teamsheet and one of the undoubted stars of the tournament. Parisse will be chomping at the bit as he returns to the Test arena after missing last year’s November internationals. This fixture is a special one for the Stade Francais stalwart as he will make a record 66th Six Nations appearance – one more than former Ireland centre Brian O’Driscoll. Despite being in the twighlight of his career, Parisse is still one of the world’s best number eights and his skill-set is amongst the best in the business. The match will also be a personal highlight for Azzurri hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini, who is set to make his 100th Test appearance.

The battle between the two fly-halves is an important one and Scotland’s Finn Russell and Tommaso Allan of Italy are two of the game’s most exciting number 10s. Both are brilliant on attack and have the ability to change the course of a match with a moment of magic. As their respective sides’ main playmakers, they will be expected to provide attacking direction while their game-management will also be crucial and whoever comes out on top in the latter department will in all likelihood also finish on the winning side.

The Azzurri will be up for the challenge and put up a fight but their hosts will prove too strong and continue their winning run at Murrayfield. Scotland to win by 12 points.

Australia are looking to end their June Test series on a positive note when they host Italy at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday.

The Wallabies will be desperate to bounce back from the disappointing 24-19 defeat to Scotland in Sydney last weekend.

The side came in for heavy criticism from the Australian media and fans, with one supporter’s enraged facebook post going viral. Coach Michael Cheika has reportedly pinned the letter from Jack Quigley on the team’s notice board as a message to his players.

And Cheika has delivered on his promise to ring the changes in the aftermath of that morale-sapping defeat.

Stephen Moore’s return to the starting hooker spot and the on-field captaincy headlines the reshuffle, while Lopeti Timani, Rob Horne and Sefa Naivalu will play their first Tests of the series, coming in for Scott Higginbotham, Tevita Kuridrani and Eto Nabuli, respectively.

Meanwhile. Scott Sio’s minutes late in the game against Scotland were enough to prove his worth as a run-on prop, lining up alongside childhood friend Allan Alaalatoa for the first time in a Wallabies Test.

And Rory Arnold has usurped his club captain Sam Carter for a spot in the second row, reuniting with Adam Coleman, after the pair became a regular duo in 2016.

Italy have never beaten the Wallabies and the last time the sides met was way back in 2013. The Azzurri are in a similar situation to the Wallabies, also coming off the back of a shock victory in a match they were favourites to win, going down 22-19 to Fiji after a last-gasp Ben Volavola drop-goal.

And the previous weekend they were dismantled by the Scots 34-13 only a few months after same side beat them 29-0 in the Six Nations.

It’s a clash between two sides with low squad morale. But beware of the wounded animal (they say) so expect the players on the pitch to be fighting to prove their worth.

The touring Springboks come up against Italy at the Stadio Euganeo in Padua on Saturday in the third test match of their post-season tour of the northern hemisphere.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has announced a starting line-up which shows four changes from the team that defeated England at Twickenham last week.

Tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis was ruled out of the match with a hamstring injury. This injury may well be a blessing in disguise for the good doctor. He has surely been over-played in the last few seasons and the break may well offer him some much-needed rest before a 2015 season which sees the return of the much-anticipated World Cup. Du Plessis will be replaced by the burly Free Stater, Coenie Oosthuizen, who gets another opportunity to prove to the many doubters that he could indeed be a success at tighthead. The Azzuri loosehead, Matias Aguero, is no easy opponent, and Oosthuizen will have to be at his best to weather the storm.
Du Plessis’s regular partner in in the front row, Tendai “Beast”Mtawarira, has also been given a well-deserved break. His place at loosehead goes to Trevor Nyakane, who has been awarded his first run-on selection for the Boks. Nyakane can expect a stern test from Azzuri tighthead Martin Castrogiovanni, who is widely regarded as one of the best scrummagers in the world.

A further change sees Johan Goosen replacing Willie le Roux at fullback, while Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje takes the place of the unavailable Schalk Burger.

Two debutants have been offered a chance to impress from the bench. They are Lions’ tighthead prop Julian Redelinghuys and Western Province loose forward Nizaam Carr.

Meyer’s selection strikes one as being somewhat conservative. While winning is important to retain momentum in the build-up to the World Cup, this match surely offered him his last opportunity to rest stalwarts such as Jean de Villiers, Duane Vermeulen and Bryan Habana. Questions were raised when a 36-man squad was announced for this tour. It seems as if there will be players in this squad who will once again return from a tour of the northern hemisphere without any game time. While one needs to realise that Bok caps are not to be given away randomly, this match was surely the opportunity for fringe players to prove that they can make the step up. One example is Damian de Allende who has not had any rugby since the end of August against Argentina. Jaco Kriel and Seabelo Senatla could also have shown whether they can take their excellent Currie Cup form onto the test stage.

One does, however, need to put aside these doubts about Meyer’s selection, and concentrate on the match at hand. The Boks have never been beaten in the eleven times that they have played Italy and should hold too many trump cards for the Azzuri. The hosts have been in terrible form lately and will have to perform a rugby miracle of epic proportions to beat Jean de Villiers’ men. Rugby matches are, however, not won on paper and the Italians will be highly motivated to prove that they belong in the top echelons of world rugby. They are ably lead by number eight Sergio Parisse, who is without a doubt one of the better eighthmen in world rugby. Their forward pack has developed a reputation as being one of the toughest in the world, and the Boks will definitely have their work cut out to subdue Parisse and his bulky “amico’s”.

Italian coach, Jacques Brunel, has selected Fijian-born flank Samuela Vunisa in the only change to the team to face the Springboks on Saturday.

Vunisa, who will make his debut on Saturday, will replace Simone Favaro in the loose trio after the Treviso player suffered a sore neck in training.
