Melbourne Storm have taken almost all before them this season and will start the NRL Grand Final as clear favourites to defeat North Queensland Cowboys and win the premiership.
The Storm have lost just four games all season en route to winning the minor premiership as ladder leaders, and haven’t been beaten since Round 10 – a run of nine straight wins.
Melbourne stormed into the Grand Final with a 30-0 demolition of Brisbane Broncos last Friday night, although the vast majority of that damage was done late on.
The Cowboys upset the odds to defeat Sydney Roosters in the other Preliminary Final, completing a third straight win on the road during the finals series having previously got the better of the Cronulla Sharks and Parramatta Eels.
The question now is whether North Queensland, who had won only one of their final six regular season games to ultimately just sneak into the finals, can achieve the unlikely and win for the fourth time as an outsider against this year’s minor premiers the Storm.
The Cowboys have history against them having won just 10 of the 35 head to head meetings, although they have won two of three finals played between the clubs. However, the Storm won last year’s Qualifying Final 16-10.
Storm did the double during the regular season, winning 23-22 at home in Round 15 before triumphing 26-8 in Townsville in Round 22 and they should take some stopping on Sunday night and make amends for last year’s Grand Final defeat to Cronulla Sharks.
Melbourne Storm should name the same side which brushed aside Brisbane Broncos with Aaron McLean set to play his final game for the club before joining the Cowboys next year.
Matt Scott looks unlikely to make a return in the Grand Final, despite being named among an extended bench last year before being left out. North Queensland expect to name an unchanged 17 with Ethan Lowe’s eye injury given the all clear.
