Reigning premiers Melbourne will be attempting to bounce back from a disappointing 32-14 loss to competition leaders the Dragons last week when they face the Titans at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.
That loss was just the second time since 2015 that the Storm have conceded 30+ points in a game – and the other time was in this corresponding fixture 12 months ago, when the Titans pulled off a shock 38-36 upset in one of the club’s most famous victories since re-forming.
Melbourne went on to capture the premiership last season, with that loss giving them the kick up the backside they needed to really focus and switch back into gear.
The Storm traditionally bounce back strongly after suffering poor defeats, which doesn’t bode well for the Titans on Saturday, with Craig Bellamy out to ensure his side don’t crash to back-to-back losses.
Melbourne are down to fourth on the ladder, but they still rank second in attack and fourth in defence, so it’s not like they are in some kind of form slump at the moment.
The same can’t be said for the Titans, who are in the middle of a four-match losing streak – and they’ve conceded 26+ points in three of those games.
Gold Coast are one of those teams that either perform at their peak and scrape out narrow victories, or they are below their best and get absolutely pummelled. Unfortunately, it’s been the latter overt the last month, with the Titans slipping to 13th on the ladder with the NRL’s worst defence.
Furthermore, the Titans have gone 0-4 against teams in the top eight this season, further illustrating how far behind the pack they are.
Melbourne are far too clinical and they will be determined to avoid a repeat of last week’s loss and last year’s 38-36 scoreline against the Titans. Expect the reigning premiers to cruise to victory.
