Brisbane Broncos attempt to keep pace with the top two when they head down to Sydney to face the seventh-placed Parramatta Eels on Friday night at ANZ Stadium.
It’s the stage of the season where the contenders and pretenders begin to separate, and this clash between the Broncos and Eels could be an example of that starting to occur.
I’m not saying the Eels are no chance of winning the premiership, but they face an even steeper uphill battle to snap their long-standing drought after star fullback Clint Gutherson suffered a season-ending ACL injury in last week’s win over the Tigers.
The loss of the dynamic fan favourite is a huge one, but the Eels have been in winning form for the better part of the last two months, suffering just one loss in their last seven games and compiling a nice four-match winning streak heading into this showdown.
With a four-point buffer ahead of ninth-placed Penrith, the Eels have a bit of wriggle room, but they won’t want to give the Panthers a sniff.
While the Eels have lost their fullback, Brisbane welcome back their star representative custodian Darius Boyd, who hasn’t played since breaking his thumb in Origin II.
Boyd’s return is a timely one for Brisbane, who will be hoping for gradual improvement from now until the finals, and Boyd’s combination with Ben Hunt and Anthony Milford is an added benefit to the team with six rounds of the regular season remaining.
Sitting pretty in third spot, the Broncos weathered an early storm from the Bulldogs last week to put 40 points on the struggling side and cement their top four status. They will be targeting a similar performance on Friday night.
Brisbane have a good recent record against Parramatta, winning their last three meetings by at least 12 points. The loss of Gutherson is a big one for the Eels, and while they are still playing great footy, I don’t know if they have enough firepower to get over the in-form Broncos. Brisbane to win a tight one in Sydney.
