Under normal circumstances, a clash between the two bottom sides of the competition with two rounds remaining wouldn’t be much of an eye-catching affair – apart from a potential wooden spoon decider.
However, this clash between the 15th-placed Eels and 16th-placed Cowboys takes on a whole other meaning because Thurston will be playing his last ever home game in Townsville in front of his adoring fans.
It hasn’t been the dream final season Thurston would have been hoping for after missing North Queensland’s run to the Grand Final last year through injury, but given all that’s happened, this will be the biggest game of his team’s season as they try to send him out a winner.
As mentioned, the match also has wooden spoon implications – lose and the Cowboys will head into the final game of the season in last spot. North Queensland have been in decent form though, winning two of their last four games, with those two defeats coming in Sydney against the Roosters and Sharks.
Parramatta have also been playing better football than their ladder position would suggest, winning two of their last three games as they attempt to avoid the spoon themselves.
The Eels have been fairly solid for the last couple of months now and pushed reigning premiers Melbourne hard last week despite the 16-point losing margin, while they put 40 points past the Dragons the previous week.
However, travelling interstate two weeks in a row isn’t ideal, while the Cowboys will be pumped for this one. In Townsville with Thurston playing his final home game, you can’t go past North Queensland here.
Matt Scott returns at prop and Jason Taumalolo is back at lock for the Cowboys, pushing Scott Bolton and John Asiata to the bench with Ethan Lowe and Corey Jensen dropping to the reserves.
Lock Nathan Brown is out injured with Peni Terepo promoted to the run-on side for the Eels. Kane Evans returns at prop and Tim Mannah and Cameron King are back on the bench. Tepai Moeroa shifts to second row, Brad Takairangi drops to the interchange and last weeks debutants Ray Stone and Oregon Kaufusi both drop to the reserves.
