Penrith Panthers go in search of their sixth consecutive victory when they entertain the North Queensland Cowboys in NRL Round 23 action at Pepper Stadium on Saturday night.
On a five-match winning streak and determined to move further away from the chasing pack of the Dragons and Raiders, the Panthers target a sixth win on the trot on Saturday night – and if they do emerge triumphant, they will leapfrog North Queensland on the ladder and cement their top eight status.
With a superior points differential, a win for Penrith will propel them past the Cowboys and to as high as sixth on the ladder by the completion of Round 23 – a very solid outcome for a team that was looking like missing the finals altogether before the start of the Origin period.
It hasn’t always been pretty, but the Panthers are getting the job done more often than not against sides below them or close to them on the ladder – and the Cowboys are certainly close to them.
Meanwhile, North Queensland have been brave in recent weeks against competition heavyweights the Roosters and Storm, but they just lack that extra bit of class to get over the line.
The loss of Johnathan Thurston is really highlighted when the Cowboys come up against the best sides in the competition, and after a solid little period maintaining a top eight spot in his absence, it looks like they will be battling extremely hard to make the finals over the last month of the regular season.
Penrith will be out to make amends for a late 14-12 loss to the Cowboys back in Round 16 in Townsville, and in front of their owns fans, on a five-match winning streak and with the chance to overtake their opponents on the ladder, I think the Panthers will grind out a win.
Penrith have named the same 17 players from last week’s win, while the Cowboys are without the injured Antonio Winterstein and Gavin Cooper, with Javid Bowen and Ben Hampton coming in as replacements.
