At the start of the season, you would have picked this Round 21 showdown between the Roosters and Cowboys to have some sort of weight in deciding the top four or even minor premiers.
However, only one team has lived up to their end of the deal – and that’s the Roosters. It was a slow start for the Tri-colours as high-profile recruits Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco joined the team, but they’ve been flying for the better part of three months now and are arguably the competition favourites at the moment.
Indeed, the Roosters have won nine of their last 11 matches to surge into third spot on the ladder – just two points behind competition leaders and defending premiers Melbourne.
A dominant 36-18 victory over fellow top four side the Dragons last week further illustrated just how dangerous the Roosters are heading into the finals, with Trent Robinson’s side also the best defensive outfit in the competition – and defence wins premierships.
North Queensland – premiership favourites at the start of the season – have endured a nightmare campaign and had their off-season holidays planned months ago.
The Cowboys have won just five games all season to hold a share of second-last spot on the ladder, although they did break a five-match losing run last week after coming from behind to edge the Knights 20-18 in the final minutes.
North Queensland just haven’t been able to generate any sort of momentum at all this season, but they will be determined to finish on a positive note and give Johnathan Thurston the winning farewell he deserves.
But I don’t think it’s going to happen against an in-form Roosters side at Allianz. The Tri-colours have won four of their last six against the Cowboys, and with both teams at opposite ends of the form spectrum, I can only see a comfortable victory for the home team here.
Ryan Matterson moves to five-eighth for the Roosters in place of the injured Luke Keary (knee), with Kurt Baptiste recalled on the bench.
The Cowboys have name the same 17 players from last week’s win over Newcastle.
