Manly Sea Eagles look to further consolidate their finals status when they take on Wests Tigers to conclude NRL Round 23 action at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.
Has there been a tougher side to get a read on this season than the Manly Sea Eagles? Trent Barrett’s team have fluctuated between the sublime and disastrous for much of the season, but coming into this clash sitting in seventh spot on the ladder, the Sea Eagles can go a long way to wrapping up finals football if they can claim the two points on Sunday afternoon.
Seemingly destined to challenge for a top four finish just three weeks ago, Manly all of a sudden suffered from a dreadful loss of form, leaking 50 points against the Dragons and 40 against the Storm to slip towards the outskirts of the eight.
However, after falling behind early and on track for another heavy loss against the Roosters last week, the Sea Eagles responded with five unanswered tries to prevail 36-18 and get their season back on track.
With the Raiders and Dragons breathing down their necks, Manly must keep their momentum going on Sunday against a Tigers side that hasn’t lost four on the trot at Leichhardt since 2000.
It’s been another frustrating season for the joint-venture outfit, but the Tigers have certainly showed signs of improvement over the last month or so.
And with the Knights winning their last two games, the Tigers have added motivation to finish the season strongly and avoid the wooden spoon.
This game comes down to the home spirit of the Tigers against the finals-bound determination of the Sea Eagles. And surely, with the threat of dropping out the top eight very real, Manly will overturn a poor record at Leichhardt and emerge victorious.
Addin Fonua-Blake replaces Kelepi Tanginoa for Manly, while the Tigers remain unchanged from last week.
