The Broncos have won three of their last four against the Eels, although the Eels won the Round 21 clash 28-14 at ANZ Stadium only a few weeks ago. Eels winger Kirisome Auva’a scored a double in the 14-point win. Four of the last five matches have topped 42 points.
Brisbane are second on the ladder with a 15-7 record with the best attack in the NRL. They have won their last three and seven of their last nine, winning their last three by a combined score of 110-22. The Broncos have posted 24 or more points in 14 of their 15 wins. Parramatta are fifth on the ladder with a 14-8 record. They rank fifth defensively but are a poor 12th in scoring. The Eels have won seven of their last eight, conceding single digits in three of their last six.
It’s not too often where teams clash twice in four weeks, but that’s exactly what takes place at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night as Brisbane attempt to avenge their 14-point loss to Parramatta from Round 21.
With both sides officially securing a spot in the finals with two rounds of the regular season remaining, the Broncos and Eels now turn their attention to targeting an all-important position in the top four.
Currently sitting in second spot after last week’s win over the Dragons, the Broncos are wrap up a top place if they can conquer the Eels – but if Parramatta emerge triumphant they will draw level with Brisbane on 34 points and head into the final round of the season next week with everything to play for.
However, if the Eels lose, they could drop to sixth if the Panthers beat St George Illawarra, making this encounter one of their most important of the season.
A top four finish is pretty much essential if you want to win the premiership, so needless to say Parramatta’s title chances could well rest on the result of this fixture.
The Eels have fond memories from one month ago when they toppled Brisbane in one of the more high-quality games of the season at ANZ Stadium, but the Broncos are a different beast in front of their home fans.
Brisbane have registered a dominant 9-2 record at Suncorp this season, while they’ve averaged 29 points per game at the venue. The Broncos also have a good record against Parramatta at Suncorp, winning their last two matches.
With Anthony Milford firing and the Eels missing a couple of key players, it’s hard to see the Broncos losing with so much on the line. Parramatta will keep it close, but the Broncos’ class will shine through in the final 20 minutes.
