Currently on equal points with the fourth-placed Broncos, the Eels are well-positioned to mount a challenge for an all-important top four finish – but they must back up last week’s outstanding performance and beat the Bulldogs on Thursday night to get the ball rolling.
Parramatta’s 28-14 victory was one of the more impressive displays of the season, with the Eels scoring the last four tries of the contest to draw level with the Broncos on the competition ladder.
We all know that a top four finish is pretty much essential if you want to claim the premiership, and now the Eels can say they have genuine credentials for ending the season in the top half of the eight.
Parramatta have a fantastic run home as well, playing four teams that have already missed out on the finals – Canterbury, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Souths – while they also tackle Brisbane again. Four wins from those five matches will get them to 36 points and that would almost certainly be enough for a top four place.
Mitchell Moses and Corey Norman’s combination is coming along nicely, while the Eels’ forward pack continues to impress. It’s exciting times for Parramatta fans, but there’s still a long way to go before the team locks down a finals place for the first time in eight years.
Standing in their immediate path is bitter rivals Canterbury, who they edged in golden point just a few weeks ago in what was a dour and scrappy affair.
Canterbury’s season officially closed down last week with another underwhelming performance, falling by eight points to the Panthers at Pepper Stadium.
The Bulldogs’ attack is the worst in the competition, and while this has been the case for a while, their defence has been poor in 2017, while the club are generally looking slow and tired and essentially out of ideas.
Parramatta have had the wood over Canterbury in recent meetings, and if they are serious about challenging for the premiership this season, they should emerge comfortable winners. The Bulldogs are lost at the moment and can’t score points. Expect an easy Eels triumph.
