Reigning premiers Cronulla Sharks attempt to reclaim a spot inside the top four when they entertain the South Sydney Rabbitohs in NRL Round 20 action on Friday night at Southern Cross Group Stadium.
Having lost three of their last five games, the Sharks have slipped to fifth on the competition ladder, and with a top four finish almost essential to winning the premiership, they defending premiers will be determined to immediately bounce back this Friday at home against the Rabbitohs.
Cronulla have transformed into an erratic outfit over the last month or so. They’ve conceded 30 points in their last two losses to the Sea Eagles and Titans – in-between a 40-point demolition job over the Roosters.
The Origin period wasn’t easy for the Sharks, who had five of their key players featuring in all three games over the last couple of months, but now’s the time to regroup and make a charge towards top spot.
Defence will be the major area Sharks coach Shane Flanagan will want addressed this week after they conceded 30 points to the 12th-placed Titans last weekend – although the game was played in monsoonal conditions at Cbus Super Stadium.
While the Sharks are near-certainties to play finals football in 2017, the Rabbitohs are now confronted with must-win scenarios for the remainder of the regular season – and even then, playing September football isn’t guaranteed.
Souths appeared as if they could be primed for a big late-season surge after their 42-14 victory over the Panthers – the first time they’ve really made an impact all year – but a pair of disappointing performances against the Roosters and Cowboys over the last fortnight has seen them slip to 14th on the ladder – six points adrift of the eighth-placed Dragons.
Both sides come into this showdown in patchy form, but needing a win for different reasons. The H2H between these sides have been relatively even in recent times as well, but surely at home with Origin over, Cronulla will just have more class and be able to grind out a win.
Origin stars James Maloney and Jack Bird return for the Sharks while Aaron Gray is back for Souths on the wing in place of Braidon Burns.
