Next Friday, England will face Wales in Cardiff in the latest instalment of one of the fiercest rivalries in world rugby, knowing that on their last visit there a crushing 30-3 defeat ended their Grand Slam dream. This year, with a World Cup just around the corner that will see the sides meet in the pool stages, the fixture has even greater significance.
Sir Clive Woodward: Wales v England clashes are big enough occasions in their own right to stand alone. We saw last year how England responded to the 30-3 hammering the year before by winning at Twickenham so it’s difficult to draw too many conclusions from one away match. The World Cup pool game will be played at Twickenham between two battle-hardened sides who will have spent an extended period in camp. But, there would be no harm in landing a psychological blow eight months out from the start of the tournament.
Jeremy Guscott: The World Cup will be brought up because it’s the nature of the beast but in the Six Nations you play one game after another in quick succession. We’re not going to know what the implications are until they actually play each other in the pool stages. England could lose on Friday but they know they can beat Wales at home.
Jonathan Davies: I don’t think it will have any implications. It’s a totally different entity and England can expect to have many players back by the time the World Cup comes around.
SP: What are the two sides’ strengths and weaknesses?
CW: A lot has been said about the Welsh midfield and rightly so because in Jonathan Davies and Jamie Roberts they possess some supremely talented athletes capable of carrying powerfully and creating a great attacking platform. Conversely, England’s midfield has had a number of question marks over it and after the autumn are no nearer knowing their right combination. But the likes of Kyle Eastmond, Jonathan Joseph and Luther Burrell have been in great club form.
It is asking a lot but they are more than capable of producing match-winning performances. George North is also sure to be a threat as he goes looking for work off his wing. It’s hard to look past England’s front row in terms of their strength and it’s fairly clear they will look to build on their dominant set-piece performance against Australia by taking Wales on up front. I really hope England play with more enterprise and are bold in attack but I sense they are going to play a very limited game.
JG: Forward domination is so important and I believe England have the edge there. Their scrum is more solid and their line-out more efficient and more consistent. With all the injuries England have, their bench is not going be as strong as it normally would be and that could cost them later in the game. Preparation for England will not have gone smoothly — no matter what they say — because all the chopping and changing through injury just cannot help your preparation.
