Joe Schmidt’s men had an impressive November series, dismantling the Wallabies and Springboks as well as cruising to a win over Georgia to end the year with just one loss.
Scrum-half Connor Murray has been given a start and will partner Ian Keatley in the half-back pairing, with Ian Madigan given a place on the bench – a move that surprised Italy captain Sergio Parisse.
“We didn’t expect probably to play against Keatley at No 10, we thought in our minds that it would be Madigan,” said Parisse.
“Madigan is the kind of player that attacks the line more, has a good step and Keatley has another kind of game. From the tactical point of view, he’s probably more similar to Sexton.”
Outside him Keatley can call upon an exciting centre partnership in the form of Jared Payne and Connacht’s Robbie Hanshaw. In the back three, Schmidt has called up Simon Zebo, Rob Kearney and veteran Tommy Bowe.
Sean O’Brien, who featured for the Wolfhounds in their match against the England Saxons last week will start in the No 7 jersey on Saturday, while Paul O’Connell captains the side from the second row. Leinster props Jack McGrath and Mike Ross start on each side of hooker Rory Best.
