With the euphoria of snapping their 19-game losing streak still fresh in the air in the Hunter, can the Newcastle Knights build on last week’s performance and register consecutive victories for the first time in over a year?
Newcastle have been in a rebuilding phase for the last two seasons now, but Nathan Brown has assembled an enthusiastic and determined young squad that you know will give 100 per cent every time they run out onto the field.
It was that intensity and youthful exuberance that got the Knights over the line – combined with the cool head on experienced halfback Trent Hodkinson.
Nathan Ross is quickly becoming the cult hero of the NRL, and his lightning pace out wide is proving fruitful, while there was plenty to like about teenage interchange forward Sam Stone – son of former Knights coach Rick.
However, we also must take into account the win was over a struggling Titans side who appear as though they will be hard-pressed to make the finals this year. Saturday’s opposition will be much tougher.
South Sydney responded brilliantly to their opening round hammering at the hands of the Tigers, clinically picking apart a disjointed Manly outfit to emerge comfortable 38-18 winners.
Adam Reynolds enjoyed a polished return to action at halfback, giving the Rabbitohs some much-needed guidance around the park, while his halves partner Cody Walker was at his electrifying best.
With superstar Greg Inglis out for six months with an ACL injury, it was also great to see Alex Johnston slot in seamlessly at fullback, with the youngster crossing for two tries against the Sea Eagles.
It’s an intriguing match-up and one both sides will fancy winning. While the Knights gave plenty of hope to fans last week, I’ll need to see more of them before I can confidently start tipping them regularly. Souths to continue on their winning ways.
