A must-win game looms for the in-form Panthers and Titans as they continue on their quest to sneak a finals spot over the last seven rounds of the regular season.
Penrith are the best positioned to do some damage over the coming months, coming into this showdown trailing the eighth-placed St George Illawarra Dragons by two points. If they can claim a big win on Saturday and the Dragons fall heavily to Manly, the Panthers could even leapfrog the joint-venture outfit into the eight by the end of the weekend.
It was a very slow start to the season for Penrith, who were perhaps unfairly labeled as joint-premiership favourites at the start of 2017, but they’ve started to generate some momentum over the last couple of months, and come into this clash following consecutive wins over Manly and the Warriors.
With Matt Moylan and Peter Wallace set to return this week, the Panthers should only get better, and at home they will be confident of continuing their winning run.
However the Titans are on a roll themselves, unbeaten since Round 15 and on a three-match winning streak, which include toppling the Tigers, Dragons and Sharks.
It’s no coincidence that Gold Coast are enjoying success on the back of some stability in their line-up – they will field the same team for three weeks in a row for the first time in 2017 on Saturday, and they will be hoping the worst of their injury problems are behind them.
Last week’s triumph over Cronulla – the second time this season they have conquered the defending premiers – will give them massive confidence – and a fourth win on the bounce will seem them draw level with the Panthers.
It’s a tough game to pick, with both teams in-form and desperate for wins as they hunt an unlikely finals spot. I feel this will be a high-scoring game, but with the Panthers playing at home and scoring at least 30 points in six of their eight wins in 2017, they may just have the edge.
