Two teams going in opposite directions clash in NRL Round 8 action on Friday night as the Brisbane Broncos look to inflict more misery on the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
After coming out the other side of one of the most brutal early-season draws in recent memory, the Broncos have posted their first back-to-back wins of the year over the last fortnight over the Roosters and Titans, and now they are eyeing off a third consecutive triumph as the Origin period quickly approaches.
Wayne Bennett would have taken Brisbane’s current position of sixth on the ladder at the start of the season given they had to face all four of last season’s preliminary finalists over the first few rounds of the campaign, and if they can emerge triumphant on Friday night, they could sneak into the top four if other results go their way.
The Broncos were good in patches against the Titans without halfback Ben Hunt, with Matt Gillett the clear standout as he charged down a Gold Coast kick in the final few minutes to hand Brisbane the win.
While the Broncos are flying high and confident, the same can’t be said for the Rabbitohs, who haven’t really played a good game all season.
Souths have lost three of their last four matches and were extremely disappointing on Good Friday against the Bulldogs, failing to register a second-half point in poor 24-9 defeat.
The Rabbitohs couldn’t offer anything in attack, with the loss seeing them slip to 11th on the ladder and staring down the barrel of a 3-5 start to the season if they can’t topple the Broncos.
I can’t see anything that suggests Souths can win on Friday night. They haven’t looked threatening all season and appear lost when pressing in the opposition red zone. Brisbane should have far too much class and firepower and will emerge with the two points.
