You know it’s bad when you start having to whip out the calculator in order to determine if your team still has a mathematical chance of making the finals, and even with its assistance, you’d be struggling to find an equation that pits the Rabbitohs and Raiders into the eight by season’s end.
Canberra have a slightly better chance than the Rabbitohs, but in reality both clubs should be checking for cheap Jetstar flights to Thailand.
It’s been a highly frustrating season for the Raiders, who many were predicting to claim the premiership after their electrifying run to the preliminary finals last year.
However things just haven’t clicked in the nation’s capital in 2017 – although they have endured their fair share of back luck, losing most of their games by six points or less. A few wins here and there and they’re are sitting pretty in the top eight.
But they are starting to lose some star power due to discipline as well now, with Jordan Rapana and and Sia Soliola joining Josh Papalii on the suspended list.
Meanwhile, I’m not sure even a calculator can save the Rabbitohs’ season. Two points behind the Raiders and trailing the eighth-placed Dragons by eight points, Souths need to win every game from now until the end of the season and hope other results go their way.
It’s probably not going to happen, but Michael Maguire’s team will want to finish the year on a positive note, and facing an understrength Raiders team at home is a good chance to get the ball rolling in that regard.
Canberra have barely played at ANZ Stadium over the years, but they have been successful when they do, winning on three of their four visits since 2013. But, on the other hand, the Raiders have just one win to their name since Round 12 – a golden point triumph over the Dragons. Souths haven’t been impressive in the slightest, but with home ground advantage and facing a depleted Raiders outfit, there’s value in the Bunnies to pick up the two points.
