Aiming to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season and hoping to extend their unbeaten run in away games this year, the Sharks face an extremely tough challenge in the form of the high-flying Roosters in Gosford in the first game on Super Saturday.
While Cronulla haven’t been at their best this season (save for a fortnight earlier in the year when they beat Melbourne and Penrith without conceding a try), they are yet to lose consecutive games, illustrating that they are fast learners and can rebound strongly after a loss.
However they have been slow out of the blocks all season, and it happened again last Sunday, relinquishing an early 18-0 lead against Manly that they ultimately couldn’t recover from, falling 35-18 at home and seeing the Sea Eagles leapfrog them into the top four as a result.
We all know how vital finishing in the top four is in regards to claiming the premiership, which means it’s imperative that the Sharks returning to winning ways immediately.
But they will have to topple another top four outfit to do so, with the Roosters surging into second spot on the ladder after their incredible escape act against Melbourne last week.
The Roosters trailed an understrength Storm side all match, but a try in the last few minutes and another Mitchell Pearce field goal in golden point secured a valuable two points and lifted Trent Robinson’s side to within two points of competition leaders Melbourne.
If the Roosters beat Cronulla and Brisbane can put a score on Melbourne, then the tri-colours will finish Round 17 on top of the table.
Fa’amanu Brown comes in for the injured Jayden Brailey at hooker for Cronulla, while Joseph Paulo replaces the departing Daniel Mortimer on the bench. The Roosters have named an unchanged line-up, with skipper Boyd Cordner still on the sidelines.
