Grand Final runners-up Wigan and Brisbane meet in the second World Club Series match of 2016. The two teams ironically met last year in the series and staged without question the game of the weekend, one that went into the 90th minute of extra-time.
Brisbane will field an extremely strong side with James Roberts to debut for the club and 13 players backing up from last year’s Grand Final. The Broncos are missing just outside backs Jack Reed and Lachlan Maranta and halfback Ben Hunt. Roberts is in for the retired Justin Hodges. Wigan will be without Tomkins brothers Sam and Joel while five-eighth George Williams is in doubt after missing the Huddersfield win. The Warriors team will feature decorated stars Sean O’Loughlin, John Bateman, Ben Flower, Matty Smith, Josh Charnley, Dan Sarginson and Dominic Manfredi.
Wigan and Brisbane have played five times in their history with the Broncos victorious four times. The Broncos won 22-8 in 1992 before Wigan bounced back 18 months later with a 20-14 win in Brisbane. The Broncos won 34-0 and 30-4 during the 1997 World Club Challenge. Last year Brisbane won 14-12 in a thriller in extra-time. Wigan are 6-9 all-time against Australian club sides while the Broncos are 9-3 v English teams. Brisbane are 2-3 all-time in World Club Challenge games while Wigan are 3-3. Australian teams won all three World Club Series matches last season.
Wigan have started the season in strong form with wins against Catalans and Huddersfield. They failed to cover either game but have been outstanding defensively and look the pick of the Super League teams. The Broncos went into last year’s decider favourites and were home until the final seconds. Brisbane failed to win a game at the Auckland Nines but defeated the Cowboys 48-26 in a trial on February 6 while a second-string side defeated Wynnum Manly 20-0.
James Roberts and Dan Sarginson are two of the classiest centres in Rugby League and should have a big impact on this match. When these two met last year it was a real defensive struggle so each team will be looking for an explosive moment from an outside back to break the game open. This will be a great battle.
Wigan are probably a little further advanced in their preparation for this than Brisbane and despite the Broncos fielding a big-name side, the absence of Ben Hunt and some holes out wide give Wigan a big chance of victory. Wigan’s strength is out wide and they matchup man-for-man in a big way. A strong forward pack only helps their chances. The upset is brewing in this one.
